Brandi Young, Winfield, to Perform in African Drum & Ensemble Performance Dec. 4

The Southwestern College African Drum & Dance Ensemble will perform on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m., in Messenger Recital Hall in the Darbeth Fine Arts building. There is no admission charge and the public is invited to attend. Brandi Young, Winfield, will participate in the performance.

The SC African Drum & Dance Ensemble, under the direction of Jeremy Kirk, assistant professor of music at Southwestern, is the newest ensemble in the Southwestern College department of music. The group studies and performs traditional music and dance of Sub-Saharan Africa.

"We are very eager for our performance and it promises to be an exciting event for our community," Kirk says. "We will present five traditional selections from West Africa including Boboobo (a celebration of new beginnings), Kassa (used for harvesting), Macrou (welcoming/celebration), Danza (recreational dance) and Gota (healing)."
