Hannah Mason, Andover, Helps Southwestern Golf Team Earn Honor

2013 Jun 6

The Southwestern College Women's Golf Team has earned the Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team Award, as announced Tuesday by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The team is following in the footsteps of its male counterparts, which won the Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team Award for men's golf in May.

Hannah Mason, Andover, is a member of the squad.

The Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team Awards are presented at the end of the season for each of the NAIA's 23 championship sports. Recipients of the prestigious award demonstrate integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership in every day decisions. These institutions and athletic programs strive for excellence in and out of competition, and are part of communities throughout the country dedicated to character-driven intercollegiate athletics.

The women's golf award is the second Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team Award for Southwestern College during the 2012-13 season. Southwestern is the only Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference member to earn one of the national awards this year, and has claimed the award in both men's and women's golf.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide student-athletes, coaches and parents the training to help them know and do the right things, inside and outside the sports setting. The program is dedicated to the principle that character is a choice and that being a champion is about reaching potential and making good decisions consistently in daily life.
