Michelle VanGieson, Norwich, Member of the SC Women's Basketball Team, Take Local Children to Pumpkin Patch

2012 Oct 25

Twenty-four players from the Southwestern College women's basketball team partnered with a second grade class from Irving Elementary School in Winfield on Wednesday, Oct. 17, for a field trip to the Dexter Pumpkin Patch.

Michelle VanGieson of Norwich is a member of the team and participated in the event.

Players helped the kids with activities including the pumpkin patch and the corn maize, and then panned for gems and arrowheads. The SC Lady Builders also served the kids a school-provided lunch and ate with the children.

"It was really fun watching our student-athletes participate with the kids from the second grade class," said Jason Jeschke, assistant women's basketball coach. "Our girls did a great job making the kids feel special and building relationships with them."

The Lady Builders have adopted Carol Coon's second grade class from Irving Elementary and will be doing multiple projects with the classroom this year.

Southwestern College is a private institution granting undergraduate and graduate degrees and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. About 1,700 students attend classes at the main Winfield campus, at six professional studies sites in Kansas and Oklahoma, or online around the world.
